この本に収録された文章は最初から出版されることを想定して書かれたものではありません。もともとタイム誌においては、実際に記事を書くことと、それのもととなる取材内容を報告することは全く種類の違う仕事なのです。記者たちはそれぞれの分野の取材内容をレポートにまとめます。これらのレポートはタイムに載るものより長く、実際の目撃情報、注釈、その背景となった事柄が含まれています。こういったレポートは出版こそされませんが、ニューヨークのライターたちが雑誌に記事を書くときのための資料として個人的に利用されたりします。タイムのハリウッド支部の記者として、私はニューヨークの小さな団体──主に芸能担当のライター／エディターたち──のためにこれらのレポートをまとめました。私はこれらのレポートを──カバーストーリー用のもののうち10個を抜粋しました──アメリカ中を駆けずり回っている私の仲間たちに希望をこめて、インタビューした人物の真に迫る、個人的な描写（intimate portrait）となるようにまとめました。私は彼らに自分の見たこと聞いたことを同じように見たり聞いたりしてほしかったのです。この本はそれらのレポートを改訂し、編集したものです。本来700ページあったものを11の短い記事としてまとめてみました。
