AUTHOR'S NOTE

The profiles in this book were not originally written for publication. Traditionally, reporting stories and writing them are two different jobs at Time Magazine. Correspondents in the field report stories. These reports are longer than a Time story and include eyewitness accounts of events, as well as commentary and detailed background information. The reports are not published but are used solely by the writer in New York as the basis for the story that will appear in the magazine. AsTime's Hollywood correspondent, I reported the following profiles for small group of New York - based show business writers and editors. I wrote the reports - ten of them for cover stories - with the hope of giving my colleagues across the continent an immediate and intimate portrait of the person I interviewed. I wanted them to see what I saw and hear what I heard. This book is a revised and edited collection of those reports. I have tried to turn the original seven hundred pages into eleven short stories.
